The challenge

UK tradies — electricians, plumbers, builders, tilers, roofers, joiners — quote jobs from gut feel, stuff receipts in the van's glovebox, and find out months later at year-end whether each job actually made money. Margin leaks aren't visible until after they've happened. Most existing software (Tradify, Jobber, Powered Now) tracks who-did-what-when, not quoted vs actual profitability per job.

What we built

MarginPal is a SaaS product that closes the loop between the quote and the job. It has three core capabilities:

  • Line-item quoting with Labour / Materials / Other cost-type tags and per-line estimated costs

  • AI receipt and invoice scanning — OCR with confidence scoring, automatic categorisation, attaches expenses to the right job

  • Live per-job margin tracking — five KPIs, a budget-health traffic light, and AI insights that re-run within minutes of every upload, surfacing patterns across your jobs in plain English
